      Buying guide

Choosing a granite colour for your kitchen

      Short answer

There is no single best granite colour for a kitchen: the right one depends on your cabinets, your light and how much pattern you want to live with. Even, speckled stones are the easiest to pair and are forgiving of crumbs and water spots; light stones brighten small or dim kitchens; dark polished stones look crisp but show smears and dust; bold-movement stones should be chosen from the full slab.

      • Decide on pattern before colour: even and speckled stones suit most kitchens; bold movement needs a full-slab viewing.
      • Light granites make small kitchens feel brighter; dark granites give contrast against white or light cabinets.
      • Very dark, even, polished surfaces show fingerprints, water spots and dust more than mid-tone speckled ones.
      • Colour is a matter of look. Performance depends on the individual stone, its finish and its care, so test absorption on the actual material.

      Start with pattern, then colour

Most buyers start with colour, but pattern usually decides whether a worktop feels calm or busy. A useful way to think about it:

Even or speckled stones have small, evenly spread grains. They pair easily with most cabinets, hide crumbs and small marks, and joints between pieces are discreet. Directional streaks add quiet movement in one direction, so the fabricator needs to keep the direction consistent across pieces. Bold movement stones have swirls, waves or veins that travel across the slab; they become the focal point of the kitchen, and no two slabs look alike.

The descriptions below describe the appearance of each material. Screens and photographs shift colour, and the photographs are historical yard photos, so always view current slabs before you choose.

      Light granites

Light stones reflect more light, which helps in compact apartment kitchens and rooms without much daylight. Colonial White shows a light grey-white ground with fine grey specks and occasional small burgundy dots, fairly even across the slab. Moon White has an even medium speckle of grey and black. Velvet White is the calmest in the photographs: a very light grey-white with a fine speckle and faint streaks. For more contrast, Platinum White is a crisp salt-and-pepper, and Far East White has distinct, scattered dark grey spots.

If you want gentle movement rather than speckle, Kashmir White and Amba White carry soft grey streaks in one direction.

On any light surface, a dark spill that soaks in is easier to see. Check how quickly the actual stone absorbs with a water-drop test and seal if needed (see the granite care guide).

      Dark granites

Dark worktops give strong contrast against white, cream or light wood cabinets. Absolute Black is a deep, even black with very little visible pattern; polished, it reflects like a dark mirror. Black Galaxy has small, evenly scattered bronze-gold flecks, and Black Beauty fine silvery-white speckles. Steel Grey is a dark steel-grey with a fine, even speckle, slightly softer than black. Tan Brown reads as very dark brown to black with reddish-brown crystals, which suits warm wood tones.

The practical point with dark, even, polished surfaces is that they show fingerprints, water spots, limescale from hard water and dust more readily than a mid-tone speckle. Flecked stones such as Black Galaxy disguise this a little. A honed or leathered finish shows smears differently from polished; ask whether the finish you want is available for the material.

      Warm and high-movement granites

Warm granites suit wood cabinets, brass or bronze fittings and beige or terracotta floors. In the photographs, Colonial Gold is a golden beige with grey and burgundy specks, Crystal Yellow a yellow-gold with a uniform grain, Royal Cream a cream-beige with a fine grey and black speckle, and Shiva Gold a cream-beige with flowing bands of pinkish-red and grey. Rosy Pink and Imperial Red are stronger colour statements.

High-movement stones are chosen slab by slab. Viscon White shows bold dark grey and black wave-like bands whose direction and density vary strongly between slabs. Black Forest has swirling white and golden veins on a black to charcoal ground. Mani White and Tropical White have softer grey and beige wavy veining, and Alaska Gold large patches of cream, brown and darker mineral on a golden-amber ground. These work best as a single large surface, such as an island, often from a gangsaw slab, and the fabricator should lay out pieces on the slab with you before cutting.

Pairing with cabinets, floors and light

Bring a cabinet door, floor tile or paint sample when you visit the yard in Emirates Industrial City, Sharjah, and hold it against the slab. If you cannot visit, ask for a remote video viewing in daylight.

      • White or light-grey cabinets: dark or mid-tone speckled granite for contrast, or a light speckled stone for a softer, brighter look.
      • Dark or navy cabinets: light granites keep the room from feeling heavy.
      • Wood cabinets: warm granites, or dark stones with brown undertones; check that the undertones of wood and stone do not clash.
      • Handle-less, minimal kitchens: even, low-pattern stones keep the lines clean.
      • Busy splashback or floor: choose a calmer worktop so the two do not compete.
      • Lighting: warm and cool LED lighting shift stone colour noticeably. Look at the slab in daylight, and imagine it under your own lighting.

      Questions

What granite colour hides marks best?

Mid-tone, evenly speckled stones generally disguise crumbs, water spots and fingerprints better than very dark, even, polished surfaces or very plain light ones.

Is black granite a good choice for a kitchen?

It is a common choice and gives strong contrast. Expect polished black surfaces to show smears, water spots and dust, so they need regular wiping.

Does colour affect how well granite resists stains?

Colour itself does not decide it; the stone's absorption and its sealing do. Stains are simply easier to see on lighter stones. Test the actual stone with a few drops of water.

      Can I choose a high-movement granite from a photo?

It is not advisable. Pattern varies strongly between slabs, and the site photographs are historical yard photos. View the actual slab, in person or by video.
