      What granite is good at

Granite is an igneous stone made largely of quartz and feldspar. It is generally hard and copes well with everyday wear and heat, which is why it is widely used for kitchen worktops, floors, steps and cladding.

It is not indestructible: edges can chip, some granites are more porous than others and may need sealing, and polished surfaces can be slippery when wet. Our granite care guide explains a simple test for sealing.

      Choosing between granites

Start with the format your project needs — cutter or gangsaw slabs, tiles or steps — then narrow by colour and pattern. Speckled, even granites hide joints and wear well on large floors; strongly veined stones look best where the pattern can be laid out deliberately.

Because every block is different, ask to see current stock before you confirm an order.

      About origins and grades

Most of our granites are Indian granites. Grades are listed as Standard, Premium and Extra; ask us what a grade means for the material you are considering.
